With the Fall Hunting Classic at Bass Pro Shops in Denver behind us it's time to focus on the 2011 hunt. While nothing hit the ground, with the exception of my bottom lip, there was plenty to learn from the 2010 season. I spoke at an event in Baily Colorado in December 2010. 150 were in attendance, only 2 killed elk in 2010. The clear skies during pre-rut and rut really frustrated Colorado bowhunters. During a normal month in September the highcountry weather typically is overcast. The overcast sky basically shortens the amount of light that gets to the cows eyes. It's the 'shortened' day that sets rut into gear. FYI, this is also whats causes the bulls to drop their antlers in the spring. The unusually hot weather also kept the confused elk in their beds very late in the day making for a tough hunt. As you plan your 2011 hunt give careful consideration to what the weather patterns have been, not just what they are.
Jay Houston and I have finally completed our book, A Hunters Field Notes! Check the stores in April 2012.

Being the Gear Guy for ElkHuntingMag.com and doing research for my book, Backcountry Bowhunting, I’ve been allowed to test many great products. When you look at the list of the sponsors I’m blessed with, please understand that I approached them only after using their products. Of all the manufacturers out there, I’ve chosen these. That alone should tell you something about these companies. Not only am I grateful for their support, but for making great products.
Thank you Bear Archery, Trophy Ridge, God's Country Camo, Gold Tip, Rocket Broadheads, Carter Enterprises and Winner's Choice Strings..
